SCRUFFLES (Yorkie Mix)
SCRUFFLES – A LITTLE DOG WITH A BROKEN BODY AND A FIGHTING SPIRIT
Greensboro, NC.....There is Humpty Dumpty, and then there is Scruffles, a precious one-year-old Yorkie Terrier mix who was picked up as a stray with injuries so horrific that it is hard to imagine how this little fellow was still managing to survive.
Scruffles was found with the entire rear section of his tiny body broken and bones protruding through his skin. With no identification and no one looking for him, Guilford County Animal Care Services did everything they could to dress his wounds, ease his suffering, and keep him comfortable until help arrived.
When Scruffles came into our care, he was in unbelievable pain. His screams and cries were absolutely heartbreaking. Hearing this tiny little dog cry out in agony was enough to make your entire body ache for him.
We immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he was placed on IV fluids and given strong pain medication to get his suffering under control. Once he was finally calm and resting peacefully, the medical team performed bloodwork and X-rays.
What we discovered explained every one of those heartbreaking cries.
Our precious boy had an open femoral fracture, a dislocated hip (coxofemoral luxation), a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), and a fracture of his pubic bone. To make matters worse, he was also anemic from blood loss.
His tiny body had endured an unimaginable amount of trauma.
After carefully weighing all of the surgical options, including repairing his shattered leg with plates and screws, I made the difficult decision that amputating his leg would give Scruffles the best opportunity for a faster, less complicated recovery.
Given his small size and the extent of his injuries, there was no guarantee that plating his leg would even be successful. He could face months of extensive rehabilitation, prolonged crate rest, and the possibility of additional surgeries if the repair failed.
For Scruffles, amputation was no longer a last resort. It became our first choice because it offered him the best chance to put this nightmare behind him and begin healing.
Once he has recovered from surgery, we can address his remaining injuries and determine what additional treatment he may need.
Dogs are remarkably resilient, and I have every reason to believe that this precious little fellow can have a wonderful life on three legs. What matters most is getting him out of pain and giving him the opportunity to be the happy, carefree puppy he should have been all along.
NOW COMES THE OTHER DIFFICULT PART — RAISING THE FUNDS TO SAVE SCRUFFLES.
As many of you know, Noah's Arks Rescue takes in some of the most critically injured and medically complicated animals imaginable. Scruffles is another little soul who desperately needs our help, and the cost of his emergency care, surgery, hospitalization, and recovery will be significant.
We cannot continue saving animals like Scruffles without your support. Every donation, no matter the amount, makes a difference.
A LITTLE HOUSEKEEPING ABOUT OUR WEBSITES AND DONATIONS
We are still working tirelessly behind the scenes to create a beautiful new Noah's Arks Rescue website that will be more secure, easier to navigate, and a much better experience for everyone.
In the meantime, we will continue posting our rescue stories and updates on our original website while the new site is being completed.
For now, we are giving everyone two ways to donate: PayPal through our original website or Stripe through our new website. Both donation options will be available with this post so you can choose whichever is easiest for you.
Please keep in mind that our new website is still very much a work in progress. If you visit it and notice unusual pictures, formatting issues, or pages that aren't quite finished, that is simply because we are still building and updating everything.
I truly believe the new site will be worth the growing pains, and I appreciate your patience while we make this transition.
We will also be posting more frequent updates on our animals, with new information added weekly. And if you haven't already joined us on Facebook and Instagram, please do! We share wonderful pictures, heartwarming stories, and delightful moments from the lives of our special dogs.
I apologize for any confusion surrounding our previous post and the donation process. My hope is that offering both PayPal and Stripe will make it easier for everyone to continue supporting the animals who desperately need our help.
No matter which way you choose to give, every donation goes toward helping us provide the extraordinary care our special animals deserve.
Thank you for hanging in there with us. We have so many precious lives depending on us, and we couldn't do any of this without you.
With love and gratitude,
Jennifer Smith
